There are different styles and brands of hearing aids due to the diverse nature of hearing loss. At the
Calgary Ear Centre we work with most major manufacturers in the hearing aid industry.

Invisible In the Canal (IIC) hearing aids
  • Smallest of custom hearing aid options.
  • Ideal for a mild to moderately-severe hearing loss.
  • Designed to sit far into the ear canal such that it is hidden in the canal.
  • Often a non-wireless instrument due to size restrictions.
  • Use a standard size 10 battery.
Completely In the Canal (CIC) hearing aids
  • Similar to the IIC instruments in that they are a custom made device sitting completely in the canal.
  • Ideal for a mild to moderately-severe hearing loss.
  • Can have wireless capability to communicate between ears, but this all depends on the size of the ear canal they are being fit too.
  • Use a standard size 10 battery.
In The Canal (ITC) hearing aids
  • Custom made devices that sit in the canal and into the bowl of the ear.
  • Ideal for a mild to severe hearing loss.
  • These are often visible in the bowl of the ear but can be easier to handle for people with poor dexterity.
  • They have wireless communication between ears and may be able to utilize connectivity with Bluetooth cellular phones or tablets.
  • Use a standard size 312 battery.
In The Ear (ITE) hearing aids
  • ITE hearing aids the largest of the custom made devices, but are easier to handle for people with poor dexterity.
  • They sit in the canal as well as filling the bowl of the ear.
  • Ideal for a mild to severe hearing loss.
  • They have wireless communication between ears and may be able to utilize connectivity with Bluetooth cellular phones or tablets.
  • Use a standard size 13 battery.
Receiver In the Canal (RIC) hearing aids
  • RIC hearing aids are the most popular style on the market as they can be discreet and utilize more technology to best accommodate communication needs.
  • They have a piece sitting behind the ear which houses the majority of the electronics and a wire placed over top of the ear connected to a speaker (also known as a receiver) in the canal.
  • Ideal for mild to severe hearing loss, but may be able to accommodate a profound hearing loss as well.
  • They have wireless communication between ears and may be able to utilize connectivity with Bluetooth cellular phones or tablets.
  • There are different sizes of RIC instruments which may utilize a standard size 10, size 312 or size 13 battery; some of these devices may also have a rechargeable battery.
Behind The Ear (BTE) hearing aids
  • BTE hearing aids have a piece sitting behind the ear, which houses all of the electronics, and a tube that carries the sound into in the ear.
  • They can be used for a wide range of hearing losses, from mild to profound, but are most often used with more severe hearing concerns.
  • They have wireless communication between ears and may be able to utilize connectivity with Bluetooth cellular phones or tablets.
  • There are different sizes of BTE instruments which may utilize a standard size 312, size 13 or size 675 battery.
