Specialized Care for Individuals with Down Syndrome

A Personalized Path to Better Hearing
At Calgary Ear Centre, we recognize that individuals with Down syndrome require on-going, timely and specialized hearing care services. People with Down syndrome often have different ear anatomy including narrower ear canals and that needs to be taken into account when fitting hearing aids.
We offer a personalized approach that accounts for these anatomical differences to ensure hearing aids are set appropriately for comfort and clarity.
Understanding the "Early Aging" of Hearing
Research shows that people with Down syndrome can develop permanent hearing loss significantly earlier than others—sometimes 20 to 30 years sooner.
It is vital to check hearing as soon as you notice changes in:
- Communication patterns.
- Social engagement (to prevent withdrawal).
- Behavior or Mental Health:
Hearing loss is frequently misidentified as stubbornness, behavioral issues, or early-onset dementia.
