Cochlear Implant Referrals

Referral Guidelines as Follows

Alberta Health Services has two locations for cochlear implant evaluations:
  • Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (Adults)
  • Alberta Children’s Hospital (Children)

General candidacy requirements:

Adults:
  • Bilateral hearing loss
  • Word Recognition Score of less than ~40% in the better ear
  • Binaural amplification for more than 6 months
  • Only one ear will be implanted
Children:

  • Bilateral hearing loss
  • Word Recognition Score of less than ~40% in the better ear
  • Two ears may be implanted if needed
Referrals can be sent by Otolaryngologists, Audiologists and Hearing Aid Practitioners including the following information:

  • Recent complete audiogram performed in the past 3 months
  • Real Ear Measurements showing soft, moderate, loud input and MPO
  • A brief narrative stating if the amplification is meeting REM targets
